Chorioretinitis
Chorioretinitis means inflammation of the choroid (blood layer at the back of the eye) and inflammation of the retina (nerve layer at the back of the eye).
Determining the exact cause of inflammation can be challenging. Possible causes of retinitis are highly variable and include:
Some of the causes listed above are part of a systemic disease. This means your dog may present with other clinical signs like vomiting, diarrhoea and difficulty in breathing.
Treatment is dependent upon the initial cause.

- Parasites
- Fungal infections (e.g. Cryptococcus)
- Bacterial infections
- Viral infections (e.g. canine distemper virus, and herpes virus, which is rare and usually seen in newborn puppies)
- Algal infections (water plant based infection, typically from plants growing in stagnant water)
- Protozoal infection (e.g. Toxoplasma, Neospora)
- Autoimmune disease - VKH Syndrome
- Genetic predisposition Borzoi breed-specific eye disorder
- Metabolic
- Cancer
- Generalised infection, such as blood poisoning or bacteria in the blood
- Toxicity (e.g., antifreeze poisoning or adverse reaction to medications)
- Physical trauma
